History of the American Bridal Quilt

Through out the Americas when a young girl was to get married she was to have made 14 hand made quilts to signify her traditional needlework skills, to her future betrothed.

This great work cumulated in her Bridal masterpiece, the finest work that was always saved for her Wedding Quilt.

Trapunto in the Americas

The history of Trapunto starts with the very first example of this almost lost art form with the year 1426 with a Sicilian example recounting the story of The Hero Tristram.

Very few if any examples are known until the art was revived into a large cottage industry in France, in the area of Provence. The work was made almost exclusively for Royal families and Aristocrats. This industry flourished between the late 15th and early 18th century. Circa (1650-1725) After the French revolutions this art form almost disappeared for the French. (With very few examples surviving)

This Art then migrated to the American continent with a very limited number of examples created between 1790-1840. These were produced mostly in the North Eastern state of New York, Conneicticut, and the state of Virginia.

A very few examples are also known from the Midwestern states form Ohio to Missouri. These usually date from the 1830’s to mid 1850’s.
